Genia McGirr describes as one of the proudest moments of her life her success in achieving her first vocational education and training (VET) qualification, a Certificate IV in Hospitality, in 2005.
“My change in career journey began 23 years ago due to personal circumstances,” said Genia. “I was a single parent for many years and working in the hospitality industry. I wanted to continue working, but with a change of direction as a trainer and assessor.”
Genia has forged a great career through sheer dedication, hard work and completing qualifications. She is currently employed as a Senior VET Consultant at TasTAFE, having gained Diplomas in Training and Assessment, Quality Auditing and Vocational Education and Training in addition to her Hospitality qualification.
“It hasn’t been easy but it has certainly been worth it,” said Genia. “Studying while juggling motherhood and full-time work was particularly challenging. There were times when it all seemed too hard but if you knuckle down and stick to it, the sense of achievement is extremely satisfying.”
Genia’s work involves working with VET teachers and managers on a range of education service activities related to assessment, resource customisation and training packages. She also undertakes various quality checks including internal audits to ensure TasTAFE remains a premium training organisation.
Genia credits her success to her ambition to stay current and pursue continuous learning. “It’s incredibly important to me to keep learning – whether by study and completing further qualifications, undertaking research, learning from others or going to conferences. I try to ensure that I am absolutely up to date with industry needs and developments,” she said.
A passionate believer in passing on her knowledge and supporting others, and as a proud member of the VET Alumni, she enjoys mentoring students and teachers new to TasTAFE.
“I’m always on the lookout for, and available to, anyone who might need some help,” she said. “It gives me great satisfaction to help people find their feet, grow in confidence, and develop their career. To me paying it forward is the ultimate reward.”
