How working for his school has provided James with a platform for success
When James Schifferle was in Year 10 at Swan Hill College, he was excited to find his school could offer a vocational education and training (VET) course specific to his interests - computers and electronics - that would earn him credits towards his Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).
Having already completed a few work placements and keen to increase his knowledge by working with an experienced team in a real life environment, James successfully applied for a school-based apprentice position at the beginning of 2015. Working in the IT department at his school one day a week, James worked towards completing a Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology.
In 2016, James was recognised for his outstanding contribution to vocational education and training at Australian Training Awards where he was a finalist in the Australian School-based Apprentice of the Year Award after being named winner of this category in his home state of Victoria.
Following his Australian Training Awards success, James secured employment within the IT department at Swan Hill Rural City Council, who support his further studies of a Bachelor of Computer Science, at LaTrobe University, Bundoora. While studying his degree James works as a tutor and demonstrator at the University.
