Jarrad discovered his love of design during the second block of work experience required of him during high school. Upon completing his work experience at a local graphic design firm, Jarrad was offered an apprenticeship with the same company. “The offer was too good to refuse,” said Jarrad, “so I made the tough decision to leave school in year 10 and pursue an immediate career.”
Jarrad ultimately came to the decision to start his apprenticeship by himself, after taking on constructive advice from his friends and family. “I was receiving great marks at school prior to finishing up – this meant my careers advisor was strongly urging me to not finish school early - I’m so glad I never listened to her!.”
Jarrad’s time as an apprentice was a busy one, having completed multiple TAFE courses, teaching part time and then spending most of his spare time training to represent Australia at the WorldSkills International Competition in 2005. Jarrad went on to make his mark before the crowds in Finland, winning a gold medal for Web Design.
“I’ve continued my involvement with WorldSkills as a director of WorldSkills Australia, and have been representing Australia since 2009 as an International Expert,” said Jarrad.
Jarrad credits the best parts of his apprenticeship coming from both the hands on aspects which he was being taught by his employer – along with what TAFE taught him.
“The TAFE courses I completed were all of such a high standard, which helped me further my knowledge with up to date content”.
Jarrad’s advice to anyone thinking about starting an apprenticeship is to, “Give it a go. The knowledge you pick up through hands on experience is worth far more than what you can learn from a book.”
Jarrad now runs his own design agency called Jala Design, whilst passing on his talents to future designers by teaching design skills at TAFE. He continues his involvement with WorldSkills as a National Judge and International Expert.
