Certificate III in Engineering and Fabrication (Light)

Engineer and business owner: Russell Routledge

Leaving school to complete an Australian Apprenticeship in Engineering (Fabrication Trade) has proved to be the right choice for Russell Routledge.

The Queenslander undertook his Australian Apprenticeship over three and a half years under the tutelage of his father, receiving his qualification in mid-2009.

Only months later, Russell started his own business - Rusty’s Metal Worx.

2009 was a busy year for Russell, as he started his involvement with WorldSkills Australia, winning a regional competition before winning the WorldSkills Australia National Competition in 2010.

This success led to selection as a Skillaroo to compete in the 2011 WorldSkills International Competition where he placed fourth.

Now Russell is motivated to expand his knowledge.

“My apprenticeship opened up doors for me that I didn’t even knew existed,” he said.

“I am now sharing what I learned through my apprenticeship with my apprentice at Rusty’s Metal Worx.

“I am also studying an Advanced Diploma of Engineering and am always looking at ways to learn and grow my business.”
