At the beginning of Year 11, Samantha (Sammy) Masih might have considered herself a rank outsider to win a major award any time soon.
Less than two years later, that’s just what she did when she won the 2015 Australian School-based Apprentice of the Year at the Tasmanian Training Awards, was a finalist in the Australian Training Awards and was appointed an Australian Apprenticeships Ambassador for the Australian Government.
Having missed some school in earlier years, Sammy struggled through Year 10 and was even hesitant about trying Year 11 but her work ethic and a desire to learn changed everything.
It began when Sammy applied for a job at Annie’s Place Bistro in Wynyard and the owner suggested that she could also do a VET qualification through an Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA).
“Because of the flexibility of ASbAs I was able to do school full-time and work in the evenings,” Sammy says.
She says that her apprenticeship training suited her perfectly. “I can read about what I’m learning but if I then go to work and experience it as well, that really helps.”
Sammy also found earning money while doing the ASbA was really helpful. “I didn’t need to find another job,” she says.
Her ASbA and other VET courses also opened doors for Sammy. A work placement at MONA, the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, led to work at festivals and events. Then, during a placement at Pepper’s in Kingscliff, NSW, Sammy was offered a position and she has now moved there.
Working hard, enjoying her ASbA and gaining motivation from a supportive teacher, Sammy’s school marks skyrocketed over her final years. Completing a Certificate II and III in Hospitality, Certificate II and III in Tourism and Certificate II in Business, Sammy’s future study plans include a Diploma of Hospitality.
Sammy’s passion for hospitality is reflected in her attitude.
“You can make someone’s holiday when you give them service with some extra personality.”
