Patrick Janes grew up on a farm and has always beeninterested in how things work. It was when he was aged 10and his father taught him to weld that he knew a career in thetrades was for him.

After completing high school, Patrick enrolled in a Certificate IIIin Engineering at the University of Ballarat and completed hisformal studies in just over two years. The combination of onand off the job training has allowed Patrick to build his skills inreal-work situations after gaining the basic skills and theory.

Patrick is now not only a skilled and fully qualified tradesmanbut he is also fast becoming a business entrepreneur. At the age of only 23, Patrick recently bought the business in which he trained and says this will give him the opportunity to train his own Australian Apprentices in the future.

Patrick was the winner of the Australian Apprentice ofthe Year Award at the 2013 Australian Training Awards. The award recognises the most outstanding Australian Apprentice in Australia.
