When visiting the Kimberley township of Broome on holiday from her life as a University of New South Wales lecturer and architect, Jacky Cheng fell in love with the community’s energy,and knew it was the place to establish herself as an artist.

After making a permanent move to Broome in 2006, Jacky secured a role as a visual arts lecturer at the Kimberley Training Institute, where she delivers courses in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture Arts, Visual Arts, Contemporary Craft and Arts Administration.

Jacky also delivers vocational education and training courses in the remote Bidyadanga community, at the Broome RegionalPrison and other sites across the east and west Kimberley region. She teaches a diverse range of learners from teenagers to elderly people, with varied life experiences and cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.Jacky was the winner of the VET Teacher/Trainer of the Year Award at the 2013 Australian Training Awards. The award recognises a VET teacher/trainer who has demonstrated excellence and innovation in the delivery of nationally recognised training to students at a registered training organisation, or in partnership with a registered training organisation.
