Diploma of Community Services Peer Worker Traineeship in Corrections
As one of Australia’s largest providers of vocational education and training, TAFE NSW works closely with industry and community partners to deliver job-ready skills and address workforce needs across the state.
In partnership with Corrective Services Industries and the Macquarie Correctional Centre, TAFE NSW developed an innovative peer worker traineeship that combines nationally recognised training, paid employment and service delivery within a custodial setting.
Integrating workplace experience with a Diploma of Community Services, the traineeship equips incarcerated learners with the skills needed to support others through peer work, a recognised discipline within NSW’s mental health and suicide prevention workforce.
Drawing on their lived experience, trainees provide practical support, guidance and encouragement to fellow inmates while developing professional capabilities and career pathways.
The initiative is delivering strong outcomes, with participants progressing from foundational qualifications into diploma-level study while contributing to a safer, more positive custodial environment.
The program demonstrates the transformative potential of vocational education to support rehabilitation, workforce participation and successful reintegration into the community.
