Harvey Hughes is a Year 12 student at Bendigo Senior Secondary College completing a Certificate III in Agriculture with Skillinvest. Working with McKean McGregor, Harvey helps move and draft sheep and cattle through busy saleyards while developing a strong understanding of livestock production and agricultural markets.
Unlike many young people entering the industry, Harvey did not grow up on a farm. His interest in agriculture began with a school elective and quickly grew through hands-on work fencing, unloading trucks, filling silos and supporting shearing teams. Drawn to the practical nature of the work and the opportunities it offered, Harvey soon discovered a passion for the industry.
Harvey is now putting that knowledge to work on his family’s land, where he is establishing a hobby farm and researching livestock breeds, health and management. He also shares his enthusiasm with others, encouraging family members to explore vocational pathways and demonstrating that VET can help turn an interest into a rewarding career.
Curious, hardworking and happiest outdoors, Harvey hopes to build a career in farming and livestock sales, turning a school elective into a future on the land.
