Employer: South Canberra Schools Vocational Training
Subject Area: Cabinet Making and Fitness
Tim Hawke is a dedicated VET educator with South Canberra Schools Vocational Training, delivering training in furnishing, sport and recreation, and skills for vocational pathways. A qualified cabinetmaker and secondary teacher with more than a decade of experience, Tim brings authentic industry practice into every classroom.
Recognising the needs of students at risk of disengaging, Tim developed a Certificate I in Skills for Vocational Pathways program for Year 10 students, embedding literacy, numeracy and science into practical workplace learning. The initiative improved attendance, confidence and engagement, while helping students achieve nationally recognised qualifications and pursue pathways beyond school. Tim has raised the profile of VET pathways across his school community, resulting in increased participation in programs and strong outcomes for students.
Now serving in a leadership role focused on pathways and aspirations, Tim mentors colleagues, supports program development and continues his own industry learning. Through his practical and inclusive approach, Tim demonstrates how vocational education can re-engage young people in learning and equip them with the skills and confidence to succeed.
