Qualification: Diploma of Auslan
RTO: Melbourne Polytechnic
Employer: LIST Services

Ying Soon completed a Diploma of Auslan at Melbourne Polytechnic and works with LIST Services. Already fluent in three spoken languages, she became curious about a language built not on sound, but on movement, expression and visual connection.

What began as curiosity grew into a meaningful connection with the Deaf community. Beyond her formal studies, Ying developed her Auslan skills through volunteering at community events, completing work experience with Deaf Victoria and supporting Deaf and hard of hearing guests in her event role at a hotel. She also encouraged fellow students, helped organise an Auslan trivia night and continued seeking opportunities to strengthen communication access and inclusion.

Ying is passionate about raising awareness of Auslan, Deaf culture and the importance of access to communication, while recognising the significance of Deaf people leading conversations about their own language, culture and experiences.

Now studying a Diploma of Interpreting, Ying hopes to become an Auslan interpreter, drawing on her passion for languages and cultures to support communication access and contribute to cultural bridging across diverse communities.
