As a flagship workforce development initiative, BHP – Copper SA’s apprentice and trainee program is building a sustainable and skilled talent pipeline for South Australia’s resources sector. 

Through immersive hands-on learning, structured training pathways and strong mentoring frameworks, participants gain nationally recognised qualifications and long-term careers—while contributing to world‑class mining operations. 

BHP’s partnerships with training providers, industry bodies and local communities ensure the apprentice and trainee program is closely aligned with evolving industry needs and emerging technologies. 

A key strength of the program is its commitment to safety, diversity, inclusion and community. Holistic support structures such as peer support networks, wellbeing resources and tailored development plans set participants up for long-term success. This is reflected in the program’s outstanding retention rate, which sits above 95 percent.
