Kerfoot is an electrical contracting company that currently hosts 27 apprentices, all employed by the National and Electrical Communications Association (NECA). Kerfoot has been associated with NECA for over 23 years, and during this time has been a host employer to over 230 apprentices.  

The Kerfoot Apprentice Program supports those who transition from school to full-time work, as well as apprentices making a career change, to complete their apprenticeship, gain confidence, and become potential leaders in the field. Almost 50% of Kerfoot’s current workforce began as apprentices, a testament to a successful apprentice strategy in a trade setting. 

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when many apprentices were not able to continue their learning due to a severe reduction in available work, Kerfoot devised a unique and innovative plan, in direct collaboration with NECA, to host a 10-week training course. The execution of this plan enabled Kerfoot to accelerate their apprentices’ learning, providing time to study and take additional classes, which assisted them when work returned to normal. 

Kerfoot offers access to a free, professional and confidential counselling service to all employees and their families, which can be used for any personal or work-related issues. Additionally, all managers and staff are trained as Mental Health First Aiders, to provide initial support to employees experiencing symptoms of mental health issues.
