Established in 1988, Angus Clyne Australia is a family owned clothing company producing high quality corporate clothing and executive fashion for both large and small business clients locally and nationally. Based in South Australia, the company has built a solid reputation for quality and excellence that is a reflection of the training and skill base of its employees.
In 1999, Angus Clyne Australia won the Prime Minister’s Small Business of the Year Award (now known as the Small Employer of the Year Award). Owner and manager, Leonie Clyne has fond memories of winning the award.
“Winning the national award 14 years ago really validated our work. It was an endorsement from expert judges that the strong emphasis we were placing on training was on track, and of a very high standard. It showed us that our training in systems, policies and procedures was producing a consistently high level of quality in our service and products to our customers,” Leonie said.
The company has continued to grow since it won the award, and was listed three years in a row on Business Review Weekly’s Fastest Growing Private Australian Companies – an achievement it credits to its commitment to training. It has consistently defied the urge to move off-shore ensuring that its skill base remains in Australia.
“After winning the award, we experienced significant growth through a loyal customer base who understood our company values and respect for training and our ability to provide employment in an important industry,” Leonie said.
As a small business owner, Leonie also gained personal growth from the award.
“As a business owner, the award gave me confidence in the direction we were taking. It confirmed to me that a heavy focus on staff training was the right approach. Now, training has become a fundamental part of our company culture.”
Leonie is a firm believer that awards for skills development are an important driver of success in small businesses.
“The Australian Training Awards allow small business owners to recognise that the importance of training employees is essential – not only to sustain their business, but also in building and planning for future growth which all leads to strengthening the Australian economy.”
Leonie offers some advice for future Australian Training Awards participants.
“Applying for the award, whether successful or not, gives a great sense of self belief, not only for business owners, but equally for every employee. The achievement reflects on the whole team as well as on company leadership and is something that everyone can contribute towards,” Leonie said.
