At only 15, Jane Alia arrived in Australia as a refugee from Sudan. With an innate passion for understanding more about health care services, she undertook an Australian School-based Apprenticeship in dental assisting and is now a fully qualified dental assistant.
In her spare time, Jane volunteers at the Melaleuca Refugee Centre in Darwin, Northern Territory, where she spends much of her spare time helping other young people in their transition to their new home.
An achiever in all aspects of her life, Jane is also the Youth Representative for the Northern Territory Council for Human Rights Education and the Vice-Chair of Multicultural Youth Northern Territory. She was the 2013 recipient of the Minister for Young Territorians’ Excellence in Youth Leadership Award.
Jane was also the 2012 Northern Territory School-based Apprentice of the Year and was a finalist the same year at the Australian Training Awards.
