The Small Training Provider of the Year Award recognises a registered training organisation that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all aspects of the delivery of vocational education and training.
Seafood Training Tasmania is the largest training provider to Tasmania’s seafood industry. Since commencing operations in 1986 as the Fishing Industry Training Board, the small training provider has grown to offer 18 nationally recognised courses to more than 600 students annually. In 2014, it was awarded the Small Training Provider of the Year Award at the Australian Training Awards.
"Whilst we have won awards both at state and national level from the seafood industry, winning this award is particularly gratifying. The feedback we have received from staff, board members and clients reinforces our view that winning this award is a career and organisational highlight for all involved," said Rory Byrne, Chief Executive Officer of Seafood Training Tasmania.
"The Australian Training Awards showcase the VET sector, which is often underestimated as a big contributor to Australia’s economic prosperity. The awards programme raises the profile of VET and rewards those that work hard to improve themselves, and our country’s skills. It was a great experience," Rory said.
Based in Hobart, Seafood Training Tasmania employs nine permanent staff and more than 20 trainer/assessors. The company offers certificate and diploma level courses in aquaculture, seafood processing, fishing operations and maritime operations.
"At Seafood Training Tasmania, we develop real partnerships with industry. On a regular basis we share staff and resources (such as vessels, latest equipment and operating systems) with our clients. We deliver in very isolated areas and provide a one-stop-shop for most maritime licencing. In a nutshell, we go that extra yard in service provision.
"It’s our relationships with fishermen, fish farmers, fish processors, ferry operators and marine scientists that sets us apart. From farm hands to managers, from Dover to Smithon, from family businesses to ASX listed companies, these enterprises are the backbone of our success. In recent years our partnerships with schools, colleges and the University of Tasmania have extended our delivery into new qualifications that will further assist industry with their workforce needs," Rory said.
