CHARLTON BROWN® is a registered training organisation specialising in community services. It provides programs across early childhood education, aged care, home and community care, disability, youth work, welfare and youth justice. Annually, it enrols almost 2000 students, with approximately 12 per cent from international backgrounds.

A further 132 students are enrolled through transnational educational partnerships in Sri Lanka, Indonesia and the Philippines.

CHARLTON BROWN® provides local and international internships to its students to ensure they are work ready upon graduation. Its complimentary safety programs teach over and above the requirements of the training package ensuring its graduates stand out from the crowd.

Study tours are arranged by CHARLTON BROWN® for potential international students, allowing them to stay with a local family whilst studying and experiencing the local culture. It also runs a working holiday program, which gives international students the opportunity to work and study around Australia and provides language support and placement opportunities in local community services facilities.

Commencing operations in 2008 with two employees, the Australian Institute of Professional Education (AIPE) is now a multi-sector education provider located in Sydney with 200 full time employees and more than 8000 students, with 1800 from an international background.

With a core purpose to drive excellence in education, AIPE offers its students a unique learning experience with courses taught in a technologically advanced and socially interactive environment.

The Institute is a higher education provider, registered training organisation and an English language centre. Its registered training organisation arm offers a wide variety of nationally recognised training ranging from Certificate IV to Advanced Diploma levels in business, human resources, marketing, management, tourism and project management.

AIPE’s mission is to make a valuable academic contribution to the community by delivering successful educational experiences to its students and to assist them develop into confident and professional individuals through focused academic development channels.

International Training Provider of the Year Award

The International Training Provider of the Year Award recognises a registered training organisation that has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all aspects of vocational education and training to full-fee paying international students in Australia and overseas.

Eligibility

To nominate for this award, an organisation must:

  • meet the conditions of entry requirements
  • be a registered training organisation for which the delivery of vocational education and training is the core business
  • deliver nationally recognised training programs to full-fee paying international students onshore and offshore.

Applications are to be made directly to the Australian Training Awards.

Note: To maintain the integrity of the Australian Training Awards, applicants to the 2020 International Training Provider of the Year Award will be subject to quality assurance checks by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA), or by the applicable regulatory authority in Victoria and Western Australia.  These checks will inform the selection process of applicants and finalists to this award category. 

Criteria

This information will be considered and used for short listing and judging purposes. Please be aware that your responses to the criteria will be strengthened by the inclusion of measurable and verifiable indicators (including student outcome data, client satisfaction data and external validation data).

The considerations listed under each criterion are provided to clarify what to include when writing against the criteria.

Criterion 1: Leading practice in international and transnational education

How you offer exceptional vocational education and training (VET) to international students, both onshore and offshore? For example, you may consider:

  • How you demonstrate excellence and high level performance in teaching and learning, including the delivery of quality training that has been customised for international students and markets
  • How you demonstrate innovation in the design of your VET products and services to ensure they are appropriate for international students and markets
  • How you provide creative and innovative solutions to the training needs of international students
  • The systems you have in place to manage, evaluate and enhance your VET products and services to ensure they are appropriate for international students and markets
  • How you engage with ongoing VET policy reforms, including your capacity to implement change as a consequence of reform initiatives
  • How you undertake continuous improvement and apply quality controls within your organisation to assure the quality of your VET products and services for international students and markets.

Criterion 2: Market Focus

How you monitor, engage with and respond to international and transnational education markets? For example, you may consider:

  • How you identify and attract new international and transnational market opportunities, and how you address these without impacting the sustainability of your onshore/offshore VET operations
  • How your planning processes embrace innovation and change, including your capacity to plan for future changes in international and transnational education markets
  • The extent to which you take local labour market needs (both onshore and offshore) into account in your planning activities
  • The strategies you have in place to identify important issues which may impact your international student business, and the key partnerships and links you have established to address these.

Criterion 3: Student and employer focus 

How you monitor, engage with and respond to international students and their employers, both onshore and offshore? For example, you may consider:

  • How you identify the needs and expectations of international students
  • How you identify the needs and expectations of employers of international students
  • The systems you have in place for collecting and analysing data on international student progress, outcomes, completions and satisfaction levels
  • How you maximise the educational, social and cultural experience of international students
  • How you meet the equity needs of different international client groups
  • How you support the employment of international students (both in Australia and overseas) in their field of study following graduation
  • How you support Australian students seeking international experiences.

Criterion 4: Staff focus 

How you build the capacity of your workforce to meet the skill needs of international students, both onshore and offshore? For example, you may consider:

  • The strategies and processes you have in place to build staff capability in the delivery of training to international students
  • Your capacity and flexibility to meet changing training needs and emerging international markets, including your response times for upskilling staff to meet these needs and markets
  • How you support and deploy Australian trainers and assessors to deliver programs offshore
  • How you recruit and support international specialists to facilitate programs onshore
  • How you recruit and support local specialists to facilitate programs offshore.

Box Hill Institute is a leading Victorian vocational education and training provider offering a variety of courses to both local and international students. In 2013, it had 37,000 student enrolments, including 6000 offshore enrolments and more than 600 inbound students from more than 50 countries.

In November 2013, Box Hill Institute was named the International Training Provider of the Year for its outstanding delivery of vocational education and training and training to full-fee paying international students.

Box Hill Institute’s income from all international activity represents approximately 19 per cent of its overall income, making its international arm a significant and strategic part of its operations.

William Angliss Institute of TAFE

William Angliss Institute of TAFE was established in 1940 as Australia’s first trade training institute for the food industry. Today, more than 23 000 students study events, foods, tourism and hospitality at William Angliss. Approximately 1300 of these students are international, with the majority from South East Asia.

Today, more than 23 000 students study events, foods, tourism and hospitality at William Angliss. Approximately 1300 of these students are international, with the majority from South East Asia.

William Angliss’ International Office employs 12 full-time staff members fluent in languages including Indonesian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese and Spanish to assist international students, providing services such as visa regulation and programme admission advice. International Student Course Coordinators are in each teaching department at William Angliss, with responsibility for helping students to navigate their timetables, monitoring student progress and arranging any support services that are required.

For the past seven years, William Angliss students have coordinated an International Student Day which promotes awareness of the international cohort’s contributions to the institute. Through day trips and off-campus activities, international students are able to enjoy unique Victorian experiences.

Charlton Brown® specialises in the provision of VET in the field of community services, offering accredited and non-accredited courses including nannying, early childhood education and care, aged care, home and community care, disability, youth work, community services and youth justice. Of its 1500 onshore students annually, approximately 30 per cent are international.

Central Institute of Technology has been providing VET to international students for more than 50 years and now educates over 3000 each year through both onshore and offshore courses. Central’s international students are able to study 120 courses, 76 per cent of which are offered at Certificate IV or above.

Central has five international student advisors to support international students with visa conditions, course progress and English language. Free access to International Student Counsellors can be provided if required.

Central is working with TAFE Directors Australia (TDA) to expand the Vocational Education Leadership Training programme to Indonesia, and is TDA’s representative on the Australia-India Education Council where it has led three projects to support the development of India’s VET sector, including a VET in Schools programme. Central is also Western Australia’s public provider representative on the Study Perth Board, which is building the profile of international education in Western Australia and overseas.
